Common Questions About Remote Collars
What is a Remote Collar?
A Remote Collar is known by many names: shock collar, E-collar, and remote trainer are the most common.
Will a Remote Collar Hurt My Dog?
Originally remote collars were used only to deter dogs from certain behaviors. The stimulation of the old-style collars was overwhelming and yes, painful. It is very important to understand that a modern, high quality remote collar is not a tool used to inflict pain. Often when I have people feel the level of stimulation their dog is likely to respond to they say "I couldn't feel that" or "it's just a pulsation."
I have an invisible fence, and that shock really hurts!
Yes, some invisible fences can pack quite a whallop because they are being used as a deterrent. A Remote Collar is used at levels that some humans can barely feel.
I've been told that Remote Collars are cruel and will ruin my dog or make them more aggressive.
It seems a lot of folks have opinions about Remote Collars without ever properly using one. The collar is used at the lowest stimulation level your dog will respond to, with careful guidance for your dog to perform and learn the behavior we are teaching. Happy, enthusiastic dogs are the result of this training method because the collar is used in a way that does not cause fear, pain, or distress.
Will the Remote Collar confuse my dog if I also have an invisible fence?
No,the sensations and teaching are completely different.
Can I use any brand of Remote Collar?
If you have not already purchased a collar, we should discuss your training goals before you make a purchase. Prices start at $210 for a training quality companion dog collar. There are many collars I cannot recommend or work with due to inconsistent function or "sharp" sensations. I'd be happy to discuss the suitability of using a collar you already own.
My dog is aggressive toward other dogs, won't a remote collar make it worse?
No. In fact once your dog learns to be attentive to your commands and you both learn how to behave appropriately in situations he finds uncomfortable the cycle of aggression will be broken.
How long will it take to train my dog to be reliable off leash?
Dogs learn at different rates, so do their human handlers. It generally takes 3-6 instructional sessions for both you and your dog to become confident working basic commands with the collar. Reliability takes time and practice as you learn to use your skills in situations which you or your dog find distracting.
